Did You Really Save Some Money?

I found out recently from Verizon because we are no longer under contract, they lowered our monthly bill $15 per line. That’s $30 a month less than what we were paying. Sweet! I just saved some money. Or did I?

When you find something at a price lower than you were expecting or planning to pay anyway, you almost always say, “I just saved some money,” or, “I just saved 20 bucks.” The truth is you haven’t saved dime, at least not yet.

Paying Less Is Not Saving Money

Paying less when you purchase something, or having a monthly bill lowered is not saving money. It is simply spending less money. But now you have an option: you can choose to put that extra money aside, to save the money.

The book, The Storehouse Principle, really opened my eyes concerning saving money. Saving or storing money is a very wise biblical principle. God has promised He would multiply our storehouses, but if we have no storehouses, there’s nothing there for Him to multiply.

After reading the book, Kathy and I decided to add several more personal savings/storehouses. We have storehouses we add to regularly for specific purchases, like emergencies, car repairs, or vacation. I call those spending accounts; we’re just putting money aside that we know we are going to spend for specific categories.

But we also have a specific storehouse we will regularly add to until we get some guidance from above on what to do with it. In other words, we’re being faithful to the biblical principle of saving and expecting God to bring increase to our storehouse. The time will come when we use some, or all of that money to make a profit, that then goes right back into that storehouse.

Saving Money Is Not A New Concept

Almost everyone has heard something about saving money. It’s not a new concept. But for lots of Christians, the principle of saving or storing money, and then praying and asking God to multiply it is not so familiar, though it’s very plainly written in the Scriptures.

As we pay attention to our spending and steward what we have, we can find ways to increase the amount we place in our storehouses. With the lowered Verizon bill, I can say I am saving that money; $30 a month now goes into a storehouse.

There sure is a lot of information about money in the Bible and rightfully so; we deal with money issues almost on a daily basis. Knowing what God says about money and following what He says, we can expect to receive.
